Required Training for Mariners
New or entry-level mariners need special training to go to work. What types of training varies with each prospective employer. If you’re working on the Western Rivers you may not need any to get started. Working on the Ocean or in the Gulf will require you to have:
- STCW Basic Safety Training; five days of Personal Water Safety, First-Aid and CPR, Fire Fighting and Pollution Prevention.
- Deckhand Safety Course is strongly recommended for new employees trying to break into the tugboat industry. This type of training will familiarize you with ship board safety, line handling safety, Mooring and un-mooring, making up tow lines as well as confined space entry, general housekeeping and shipboard etiquette.
